Acid dyes are water soluble and have anionic properties. Water-soluble dyes usually have a complex chemical structure containing sulphonyl or amino groups. In textiles, acid dyes consist of acidic molecules and are commonly applied at low pH levels. As these dyes dissolve in water, the process of dyeing with them takes place primarily in water, which interacts with the dyed material. In comparison with basic dyes, they are highly water-soluble and have better lightfastness. Natural proteins including wool and silk, synthetic polyamides such as nylon, and to a limited extent acrylics and blends of these fibres are often dyed using acid dyes. Acidic or neutral dyebath conditions are used to apply them to these fibers.
