Liquid gases are vaporized by ambient air vaporizers by absorbing heat from the environment. Due to this simple operation, these vaporizers do not require external power. A natural draft ambient air vaporizer is low maintenance and has no operating expenses (OPEX) due to its lack of moving parts. For industrial use, cryogenic liquid plants use ambient air vaporizers to vaporize cryogenic liquids, such as liquid nitrogen. A low boiling point liquid is heated by an ambient air vaporizer using latent water heat or sensible air heat. They have relatively low vaporization duties in comparison with LNG regasification terminals. In offshore and floating regasification facilities, atmospheric air vaporizers are not economically or practically feasible for regasification of LNG.
Multi-finned heat transfer elements are usually used in vaporizers and heat exchangers for ambient air. Heat can be transferred relatively efficiently from ambient air to LNG via finned heat exchangers due to the large temperature difference between ambient air and LNG. This type of exchanger has a vertical orientation and a countercurrent flow between colder, denser air (due to gravity) and LNG in the vaporizer tubes.
