AMORPHOUS GRAPHITE MARKET OVERVIEW

The global amorphous graphite market size was approximately USD 0.13 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 0.29 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 9.2% from 2025 to 2033.

Amorphous graphite is a type of seam mineral, not a type of vein mineral. Metamorphism of existent anthracite coal seams creates it. Seam graphite contains more ash than other types of natural graphite. It is also considered to be the least "graphitic" among all the natural graphite variants. In both large and small-grained sizes, it is substantially less reflective and as a result, it has a darker color compared to every other mineral. It has a stable carbon content ranging from 60% to 85%. It is the most prevalent form of graphite and is found in a variety of lubricant products such as grease and forging lubricants.

This form of graphite is suitable for applications requiring high ash and low carbon content. It is an excellent value for engineering applications that require graphite material at a low cost.

Amorphous graphite is so named because minute graphite crystals are not visible to the human eye and thus have an amorphous appearance.  In the refractories sector, it is used to make crucibles, molds, ladles, nozzles, and troughs that can survive extremely high temperatures, notably when casting steel. Indeed, this form of graphite is utilized to make the electrodes in many electrical metallurgical furnaces, including the electric arc furnaces used in steel manufacturing.

COVID-19 IMPACT

Halt on Chemicals and Advanced Materials Production to Hamper Market Growth

The global COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented and staggering, with the amorphous graphite market experiencing lower-than-anticipated demand across all regions compared to pre-pandemic levels. The spike in CAGR is attributable to the amorphous graphite market growth and demand returning to pre-pandemic levels once the pandemic is over.

COVID-19 affected almost all the industries and markets globally, which slowed down economic growth and altered consumer purchasing patterns. National and international travel was hampered as a result of lockdowns applied in several nations, which greatly disrupted the supply chain of numerous sectors around the world, consequently increasing the supply-demand gap. As a result, the limited availability of raw material supply hampered the production rate of amorphous materials, which negatively impacted the market growth.

Even though the global market had been affected due to the pandemic, increased demand is anticipated after the pandemic as industrial operations resume.

LATEST TRENDS

Expanding use of Amorphous Graphite to Drive Market Growth

One of the market's significant trends is the continuous product innovation by key players in response to the increased demand for innovative graphite products. One of the growing trends is the increased usage of graphite in the chemical industry for various reactions. Its applications include the reaction tank, absorption tower, heat exchanger, and chemical filler. Furthermore, the burgeoning electronic market as a result of the increasing use of electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, and so on is expected to drive the market growth. Graphite is utilized in the manufacturing of rechargeable and long-lasting batteries for electronic devices.

DRIVING FACTORS

Increasing Demand Across Various Industries to Facilitate Market Development

Increased demand and use of products made from amorphous graphite, ranging from lubricants to industrial uses for manufacturing products that withstand high temperatures are expected to expand the market size. Apart from refractories, it is also used in brake linings, gaskets, and many more. Furthermore, pencil lead is made from low-quality amorphous graphite, primarily from China. Continuous demand across major end-use industries due to rapid industrial expansion in both developed and developing countries will augment the product demand significantly.

RESTRAINING FACTORS

Rising Steel Demand and Price Fluctuations to Hamper Market Prospects

The increasing demand of the lithium-ion battery industry and large steel production via graphite electrode electric arc furnaces drives the global graphite market. The increase in graphite export duty in China and the lowering price trend of natural graphite are the major factors restraining global amorphous graphite market growth over the projection year. The decline in steel demand in other nations, notably India and China, has also impacted the market.

Many health issues were also reported in some places of the world due to prolonged exposure of graphite which causes asthma and many other issues for kids which was also one of the major reason for the decreased market demand.

AMORPHOUS GRAPHITE MARKET REGIONAL INSIGHTS

Asia Pacific Leads the Market Due to Increasing Local Demand

Asia Pacific leads in the global amorphous graphite market, driven by China, which is the major producer due to its rapid industrialization. China will be a key market in the Asia Pacific due to the availability of natural amorphous graphite at reasonable prices and considerable local demand. Other emerging economies such as Japan, India, and South Korea will also present enormous opportunities for regional growth.

North America is the second-largest market for natural amorphous graphite globally, due to the presence of a large number of foundries and battery producers. Rising expenditures in e-mobility and battery grid storage are predicted to increase graphite use in these sectors. Furthermore, established end-users such as steelmaking and refractories are expected to retain demand in the next years.
