CONDENSING UNIT MARKET REPORT OVERVIEW
The global condensing unit market size was USD 22020 million in 2020 and the market is projected to touch USD 28920 million by 2026, exhibiting a CAGR of 4.6% during the forecast period.
A condensing unit is a crucial component in a refrigeration or air conditioning system. It's responsible for releasing heat absorbed from inside a space (or from refrigerated goods) into the surrounding environment. The unit contains a compressor, condenser coil, fan, and sometimes other components like a receiver-dryer or expansion valve. The compressor compresses the refrigerant, increasing its temperature and pressure. The hot, high-pressure refrigerant gas then flows into the condenser coil. As the hot refrigerant gas flows through the condenser coil, it releases heat to the surrounding air (or water, in certain systems). This causes the refrigerant to condense into a high-pressure liquid.
From here, the high-pressure liquid refrigerant typically goes through an expansion valve, where its pressure is reduced. This pressure reduction causes the refrigerant to evaporate, absorbing heat in the process. The now-cooled refrigerant, in its gaseous state, flows through the evaporator coil inside the space to be cooled. Here, it absorbs heat from the interior, cooling the air or space. The cycle repeats as the refrigerant continuously circulates through the system, absorbing heat from inside and releasing it outside via the unit.
COVID-19 Impact: Supply Chain Disruptions to Hinder Market Growth due to Pandemic
The global COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented and staggering, with the market experiencing lower-than-anticipated demand across all regions compared to pre-pandemic levels. The sudden market growth reflected by the rise in CAGR is attributable to market’s growth and demand returning to pre-pandemic levels.
The pandemic disrupted global supply chains, causing delays in manufacturing and delivery of components used in these units. This led to challenges in production and distribution for manufacturers. Demand for the units experienced fluctuations during the pandemic. While demand for refrigeration equipment remained relatively stable, demand from sectors such as commercial real estate, hospitality, and retail, which heavily rely on air conditioning and refrigeration systems, experienced declines due to lockdowns and restrictions. Changes in consumer behavior, such as increased demand for online shopping and food delivery services, led to higher demand for refrigeration equipment in sectors like cold storage and food processing.
LATEST TRENDS
"Low-GWP Refrigerants to Drive Market Growth"
Energy efficiency continues to be a significant trend in the HVAC industry, contributing to the condensing unit market growth. Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on developing units that consume less energy while maintaining high performance. This trend is driven by both environmental concerns and the desire to reduce operating costs for end-users. Integration of smart technologies and IoT (Internet of Things) capabilities into the units is gaining momentum. These technologies enable remote monitoring, diagnostics, and control of HVAC systems, leading to improved efficiency, predictive maintenance, and energy savings. With growing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures related to greenhouse gas emissions, there is a shift towards using refrigerants with lower global warming potential (GWP) in condensing elements.
CONDENSING UNIT MARKET SEGMENTATION
By Type
Based on type the global market can be categorized into air-cooled, water-cooled and evaporative.
- Air-cooled Condensing Unit: An air-cooled is a type of condensing element that dissipates heat from the refrigerant to the ambient air using a condenser coil and a fan. It is commonly used in smaller-scale refrigeration and air conditioning applications, such as residential and light commercial cooling systems.
- Water-cooled Condensing Unit: A water-cooled unit is a type of unit that uses water as a cooling medium to remove heat from the refrigerant. It typically consists of a condenser coil through which water flows, absorbing heat from the refrigerant, and a cooling tower or water source to dissipate the heat.
- Evaporative Condensing Unit: An evaporative is a type of unit that combines elements of air-cooled and water-cooled systems, utilizing both air and water for heat dissipation. It incorporates a condenser coil surrounded by a wetted surface or evaporative pads, which allows water to evaporate and absorb heat from the refrigerant.
By Application
Based on application the global market can be categorized into commercial, industrial and transportation.
- Commercial Segment: The commercial segment refers to businesses and facilities that provide goods and services to consumers. This includes retail stores, restaurants, hotels, office buildings, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions. Commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems are used for various purposes, such as preserving food and beverages, maintaining comfortable indoor environments, and ensuring the proper functioning of equipment.
- Industrial Segment: The industrial segment comprises manufacturing facilities, warehouses, distribution centers, and other industrial operations that require specialized HVAC solutions. Industrial HVAC systems are designed to meet the unique requirements of industrial processes, which often involve high heat loads, harsh environments, and stringent temperature control needs.
- Transportation Segment: The transportation segment involves vehicles and transportation infrastructure where HVAC systems are used to provide comfort and safety for passengers and cargo. This includes various modes of transportation such as automobiles, buses, trains, airplanes, ships, and refrigerated trucks.
DRIVING FACTORS
"Energy Efficiency Regulations to Augment the Market"
The increasing demand for refrigeration and air conditioning across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors is a major driver for condensing elements. As populations grow, urbanization expands, and living standards rise, the need for temperature-controlled environments grows as well. Stringent energy efficiency regulations and sustainability initiatives drive the adoption of energy-efficient HVAC systems, including these units. Manufacturers develop units with higher efficiency ratings to comply with regulations and meet consumer demand for environmentally friendly solutions. Innovations in compressor technology, heat exchangers, and refrigerants contribute to the development of more efficient and reliable condensing elements. Features such as variable-speed compressors, advanced controls, and integrated sensors enhance performance and optimize energy usage.
"Urbanization and Infrastructure Development to Expand the Market"
Growing awareness of environmental issues, including climate change and ozone depletion, influences the choice of refrigerants used in condensing elements. Regulations aimed at phasing out ozone-depleting substances (e.g., HCFCs) and reducing greenhouse gas emissions drive the adoption of alternative, low-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants. Demand for condensing elements is influenced by various end-user industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, hospitality, and retail. Factors such as population growth, changing consumer preferences, industry expansion, and regulatory requirements within these sectors drive the demand for refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Urbanization trends and infrastructure development projects, particularly in emerging economies, drive the demand for HVAC systems, including condensing elements. The construction of residential complexes, commercial buildings, healthcare facilities, and cold storage warehouses increases the need for reliable cooling solutions.
RESTRAINING FACTOR
"Maintenance and Operating Costs to Potentially Impede Market Growth"
The upfront cost of purchasing and installing condensing elements can be relatively high, especially for larger or more advanced models with energy-efficient features. This high initial investment may deter some end-users from upgrading or replacing their existing systems. In addition to the initial purchase cost, ongoing maintenance and operating expenses can also be significant for condensing elements. Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure optimal performance and efficiency, and this ongoing expense can be a restraining factor for budget-conscious buyers.
