The receiver uses the information from at least four satellites (in the case of GPS) to calculate its own precise position on Earth's surface. This process is called trilateration and involves determining the intersection point of spheres centered on each of the selected satellites. In addition to position, GNSS receiver can also determine velocity and accurate time information by analyzing the Doppler shifts in the received satellite signals.
