In an RFoG architecture, fiber optic cables are used to extend the reach of the CATV network from the headend (central point where content is distributed) to the subscriber's premises. At the subscriber's end, the optical signals are converted back to RF signals for distribution within the home.

RFoG is compatible with existing cable television infrastructure, allowing operators to leverage their existing coaxial distribution networks while gradually transitioning to fiber optics. It provides a migration path toward full fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments, enabling cable operators to upgrade their networks gradually. It's worth noting that RFoG is just one approach to delivering broadband services, and other technologies such as passive optical networks (PON) and DOCSIS 3.1 are also commonly used in the telecommunication industry.
