In November 1964, Antonio Ferri successfully confirmed that scramjet was capable of producing net thrust. The scramjet was able to generate 517 pounds-force (2.30 kN), or approximately 80% of his target. Billig's Ph.D. thesis filed a patent application for this combustion ramjet in 1964. After a secrecy order was lifted, this patent was granted in 1981.
