The global scramjet market size was USD 55.64 billion in 2021 and is projected to touch USD 66.84 billion by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of 3.1% during the forecast period.
The spike in CAGR is attributable to scramjet market growth and demand returning to pre-pandemic levels once the pandemic is over. The global COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented and staggering, with scramjet experiencing higher-than-anticipated demand across all regions compared to pre-pandemic levels. A ramjet air breathing jet engine variation known as a scramjet, also known as supersonic combustion ramjet, uses combustion that occurs in supersonic airflow. A scramjet uses high vehicle speeds to compress incoming air strongly prior to combustion (hence the name "ramjet"), just like ramjets do. However, unlike ramjets, which use shock cones to decelerate the air to subsonic accelerations before the combustion process, a scramjet does not use shock cones and instead restricts the airflow using shockwaves generated by its ignition origin. As a result, the scramjet can run efficiently at very high speeds.
Antonio Ferri and Alexander Kartveli promoted the scramjet strategy during the 1950s and 1960s US aerospace plane program. In the US and the UK, numerous practical scramjet engines were constructed and tested on the ground in the 1950s and 1960s. In November 1964, Antonio Ferri successfully confirmed that scramjet was capable of producing net thrust. The scramjet was able to generate 517 pounds-force (2.30 kN), or approximately 80% of his target. The advantages and drawbacks of supersonic combustion ramjets were covered in an analytical paper from 1958. Based on Gordon L. Dugger and Billig, Frederick S. Billig's Ph.D. thesis filed a patent application for this combustion ramjet in 1964. After a secrecy order was lifted, this patent was granted in 1981.
COVID-19 Impact: Market Experienced Downfall Due to Shortage of Supplies
The COVID-19 epidemic has presented the military sector with hitherto unheard-of difficulties. Due to restrictions placed on the defense budget by the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and other wealthy nations, the market's growth has slowed down. Despite the pandemic, some of the market's major companies were able to produce the promised aircraft, while others came nowhere near doing so. The COVID-19 pandemic's effects and the ensuing lockdown on France's military industry did not stop France from delivering all 36 Rafale fighter aircraft to India by 2022, according to information provided by the French ambassador to the Indian Ministry of Defense in December 2020. In 2020, Lockheed Martin delivered 120 F-35s to the American military and other customers, falling short of its original 141 aircraft target, the company reported.
LATEST TRENDS
"Rising Adoption of Sustainable Commercial Products to Aid Market Growth"
Manufacturers of airplanes have been emphasizing sustainability in recent years. OEMs have made noise reduction their top priority by putting the most recent noise-reducing technologies into the engine and airframe, in addition to minimizing carbon emissions and fuel consumption.
Boom Technology, a U.S.-based business, is developing Overture, the world's first commercial airplane. A supersonic airliner with 55 passengers is called the Boom Overture. With an operating range of 4,500 NMI (8,300 km) and a top speed of Mach 2.2, it will significantly alter the way people travel. Boom Technology asserts that supersonic scramjet will use only environmentally friendly aviation fuels and produce as little noise as possible. These factors are expected to surge scramjet market growth.

- By Application Analysis
Based on application, the market is classified into military applications, supersonic or hypersonic transportation, and others.
DRIVING FACTORS
"Growing Need for Reduced In-Flight Time to Propel Product Demand"
One of the key reasons propelling this market is the increasing need for shorter in-flight durations. The in-flight time of a supersonic aircraft is roughly half that of a conventional commercial jet. The new generation of subsonic aircraft is 30% less efficient than the second-generation supersonic jet, which will travel at speeds and is estimated to surge scramjet market growth.
"Escalating Need of Replacing Aging Military Fleets to Augment Market Growth"
The steady development of technological advancements is expected to lead to the replacement of conventional products. The evolving threats and complete new mission objectives, expensive upgrades, and many outdated aircraft fleets frequently need extra. The ongoing need for a supersonic aircraft outfitted with cutting-edge surveillance and combat technologies is anticipated to reach new heights in the forecasted timeframe. These factors are anticipated to propel market growth.
RESTRAINING FACTORS
"Strict Regulation Regarding the Aerospace Industry to Hamper Market Growth"
Although the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation have imposed strict regulations that will serve as application criteria for special authorizations for a supersonic test flight, supersonic flights are still prohibited in the United States. Final regulations for civil supersonic test flights in the United States were released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
